From Camp Hood to Fort Cavazos — the Great Place.
Few military posts have shaped Central Texas the way Fort Hood has. It turned a small railroad town into a boomtown — and it's been "The Great Place" ever since.
In 1942, with World War II in full swing, the U.S. Army needed open land to train the new Tank Destroyer Center. They found it in the rugged hills and ranchland just west of Killeen. Camp Hood was established on September 18, 1942, named after Confederate General John Bell Hood. Thousands of soldiers — and the civilian support that came with them — transformed the area almost overnight.
After the war, the Army recognized what it had. In 1950, Camp Hood was redesignated as a permanent installation and renamed Fort Hood. Over the decades, it became one of the largest active-duty armored posts in the U.S. military and the home of the III Armored Corps, the 1st Cavalry Division, and countless other units that have deployed around the world.
On May 9, 2023, the installation was officially renamed Fort Cavazos in honor of General Richard E. Cavazos — a Texas native, Korean and Vietnam War veteran, and the first Hispanic four-star general in the U.S. Army. It was a moment of pride for Latino service members and their families across the country, and especially here in Central Texas.

Do you deliver on post?
Delivery availability is confirmed at checkout based on your address. On-post delivery may depend on gate access and current post rules — when in doubt, order for pickup or have someone meet the driver near the gate.
Is Fort Hood the same as Fort Cavazos?
Yes — the installation was officially renamed Fort Cavazos in May 2023 in honor of Gen. Richard E. Cavazos. Many locals still call it Fort Hood, and we'll answer to both.
